THE LIE HAS
ALWAYS BEEN
THE SAME.
I've been around the fitness industry for more than 60 years. You might think that makes it hard for you to relate to me. But it really means that I know what you're being sold and what to expect. Because while time and technology change, the bullshit does not.
In the 1960s, they sold vibrating belt machines that promised to jiggle the fat away. In the '80s, it was the ThighMaster. The '90s gave you 8-Minute Abs. The 2010s brought waist trainers, detox teas, and butter in your coffee. Today it's 30-day challenges, "Nature's Ozempic," and whatever went viral on your feed this week.
Every single one of those things had something in common: it was sold as a shortcut, and it took you further from your goal. Not because you were naive. Because the machine that sells these things is sophisticated. The algorithm rewards novelty, not results. The fitness industry profits from confusion. And every decade, the same playbook runs — new packaging, same lie.
The boring truth — eat enough protein, follow a real program that helps you make progress each week, have someone support you and hold you accountable, sleep, and be patient — hasn't changed since I started training as a teenager in Austria. It just doesn't go viral. But it leads to the changes you want. — Arnold Schwarzenegger
